Many women want to lose weight. Almost all those women have a target weight in mind. But often that target weight is not realistic: it's way too low. Your 'ideal weight' can even be many kilos higher. But how do you determine your ideal weight?

It is important to accept that you will never be as light when you were ten or twenty years ago. As you grow older, you get a lot fat and so heavier. That's normal and not bad at all. Your weight as a teenager can therefore not be your target weight.

In general, people are getting heavier. A woman of 40 weighed 20 years ago less than a woman of 40 now. This has to do with the time we live, with much more fast food and fat food. You can resist it, but maybe it's better to accept that you will not reach the weight your mother had when she was as old as you. That does not work, it applies to just about all women.

That does not mean that you just have to embrace each kilo. Normally, we always use the Body Mass Index to calculate whether you have a healthy weight, but American research does not always show a good outcome. The BMI formula does not take into account body type (whether you are a pear or an apple), genetic properties and muscle mass.

The best way to determine if you have a healthy weight is to remember the time when you felt the most healthy and happiest. That was probably the period in which you did not ate too much (because you are unhappy) and you do not overdo it too much (you get unhealthy). How much did you weigh then? That might be your ideal weight.

Do you no longer know what period of your adult life you felt the most healthy and happiest? Then take the standard calculation for the ideal weight for women: Take 50 kilos for the first 1.50 meters of your length. Add a kilo per centimeter of body length. For muscle mass, body type and genetic properties, take a 10 percent margin up and down. Within this range, your weight is healthy. So if you are 1.60 meters long, your healthy weight is between 54 and 66 kilograms.

This is of course still a very general directive, the most important thing remains: if you feel lucky (and accept that your teen weight is an unreachable pursuit) and if you are healthy you are most likely to be on your ideal body weight.
